Funding helps school make maths fun
This is the tab body content. It is typically best to keep this area short and to the point so it isn't too overwhelming.

Children and their families from across Ogmore Vale are being given a new way to enjoy learning maths together, thanks to funding from Pennant Walters, which has supported the launch of numerous maths initiatives.

Thanks to our funding Ogmore Vale Primary School has introduced a weekly Darts for Numeracy and Family Engagement Club, whilst the school has also developed a Numeracy Nook, to help pupils improve their maths skills whilst having fun and spending quality time learning with their families.

Family Engagement Officer Maria Balchin at Ogmore Vale Primary School explains:

“We are delighted that this funding has enabled us to get this important maths initiative off the ground.

“Not only is it helping children throughout the school year-round, it is also helping parents and guardians become more involved in their children’s learning. By taking part in activities together, families can see how maths skills can be developed through everyday games and challenges, while building stronger relationships with the school and each other.

“For pupils, it provides an opportunity to develop their numeracy skills in a different way, particularly benefiting children who may find traditional classroom learning more challenging.

“Now that we have these focus areas in place across the school, the initiative will benefit pupils for years to come.”

The new Numeracy Nook provides a dedicated space where pupils can take part in hands-on maths activities, games and challenges, helping to build their confidence and develop their skills through play and practical learning. From darts and number games to problem-solving and strategic challenges, the area gives children the opportunity to practice key maths skills in a relaxed and enjoyable environment.

The funding was secured from Pennant Walters, through its fund linked to the construction of the new, but standalone, Pant y Wal Wind Extension Farm, adjacent to Ogwr Valley.

Maria added:

“The funding is helping our school create an inclusive and engaging approach to numeracy, showing children and families that maths can be found in all sorts of games and activities - and that learning it can be fun.”

Dale Hart, Managing Director at Pennant Walters, added:

“It’s great to see Ogmore Vale Primary take an inclusive approach to learning and for them to open their doors to their family community.

“Our wind energy projects come with community funds that we use to invest in projects such as this and our aim is to bring very real benefits to the communities in the vicinity of our projects, providing financial assistance and expertise where we can.”
