The Mynydd Bwllfa wind farm is located 2.5kms to the south of the village of Hirwaun in Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough. The site is located on a sloping upland mountain plateau on Mynydd Bwllfa some 2.5kms west of Aberdare. The application for a 12 turbine development was made in April 2009 informed by the Inspectors Decision Letter (dated December 2008) on a previous wind farm proposal. This new 12 turbines application was amended to 10 turbines in December 2009 following consultation with the LPA and statutory bodies.
In February 2010 the amended scheme was presented to RCT planning committee with a Planning Officer’s recommendation for approval. There were no statutory consultees’ objections to the amended Mynydd Bwllfa wind farm scheme. The Planning Committee resolved to not accept the Officer’s recommendation for the reasons given in the report. Pennant Walters appealed and were granted permission in mid-2012 following a Public Hearing in May 2012.
Financing and procurement were completed in just over 12 months and construction started in November 2013. Construction was completed in summer 2015. The wind farm has a remaining operational life of over 22 years.
